چکیده

The assessed binary phase diagram of boron-carbon exhibits a single intrinsically disordered alloy phase designated “B4C” with rhombohedral symmetry occupying a broad composition range that falls just short of the nominal carbon content of 20%. As this composition range is nearly temperature independent, the phase diagram suggests a violation of the third law of thermodynamics, which typically requires compounds to achieve a definite stoichiometry at low temperatures. By means of first principles total energy calculations we predict the existence of two stoichiometric phases at T=0K: one of composition B4C with monoclinic symmetry; the other of composition B13C2 with rhombohedral symmetry. Using statistical mechanics to extend to finite temperatures, we demonstrate that the monoclinic phase reverts to the observed disordered nonstoichiometric rhombohedral phase above T=600K, along with a slight reduction on carbon content.

Specific heat of aluminium-doped superconducting silicon carbide

The discoveries of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond, silicon and silicon carbide renewed the interest in the ground states of charge-carrier doped wide-gap semiconductors. Recently, aluminium doping in silicon carbide successfully yielded a metallic phase from which at high aluminium concentrations superconductivity emerges. Here, we present a specific-heat study on superconduct...

Phase Transitions of Boron Carbide: Pair Interaction Model of High Carbon Limit

Boron Carbide exhibits a broad composition range, implying a degree of intrinsic substitutional disorder. While the observed phase has rhombohedral symmetry (space group R3̄m), the enthalpy minimizing structure has lower, monoclinic, symmetry (space group Cm). The crystallographic primitive cell consists of a 12-atom icosahedron placed at the vertex of a rhombohedral lattice, together with a 3-a...

Surfactant Effect on the Synthesis of B4C-nano TiB Composite by Co-precipitation Method

Titanium diboride is one of the candidate materials for high temperature applications and also for control rod elements in high temperature reactors. This paper presents the experimental data on the composites of B4 C-nano TiB2 that were synthesized successfully by co-precipitation methodat 1523K. Titanium tetraisopropanol, boron carbide, isopropanol and triton x-100were used as the precursor m...

Stabilization of boron carbide via silicon doping.

Boron carbide is one of the lightest and hardest ceramics, but its applications are limited by its poor stability against a partial phase separation into separate boron and carbon. Phase separation is observed under high non-hydrostatic stress (both static and dynamic), resulting in amorphization. The phase separation is thought to occur in just one of the many naturally occurring polytypes in ...

Depressurization amorphization of single-crystal boron carbide.

We report depressurization amorphization of single-crystal boron carbide (B4C) investigated by in situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy. It was found that localized amorphization of B4C takes place during unloading from high pressures, and nonhydrostatic stresses play a critical role in the high-pressure phase transition. First-principles molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the depressur...
